Italy coach Marcello Lippi has played his last lifeline, claiming the World Cup begins now as the team gets down to the real business of making progress.
The coach braced himself as he met a string of questions from the press.
He insisted on the need for the players to play their part in going forwards, but made clear there would be no change in strategy, though he acknowledged the media were right to question his choices.
"I read that [Fabio] Capello said his players were scared of the World Cup," said Lippi.
"But this is exactly what I don't want to happen to us. We have to think that our World Cup begins now.
"It's right to take responsibility, but we must not look at the glass as being empty.
"We have to resolve our problems before we move on.
"I read that confusion increases on the pitch because of me, but I have always made changes in my career.
"And when things go well the media say I find the solutions."
Italy take on Slovakia on Thursday in a must win game if they are to stay in South Africa.
