Andrea Pirlo Hopes To Return For Final Group Game Against Slovakia

Andrea Pirlo

Milan play-maker will miss the first two matches with a calf injury

AC Milan midfielder Andrea Pirlo is optimistic that he will be able to return for Italy’s final World Cup group game against Slovakia.
The 31-year-old injured his calf in a 2-1 friendly defeat against Mexico last week, leaving him out for three weeks and a major doubt to feature for the World Champions in the group stage.
However, Pirlo insists that he is feeling better and hopes to be fit for the June 24 match against the Slovaks.
"Over the last few days I have been recovering and I feel less pain," Pirlo told Gazzetta dello Sport.
"The situation is encouraging as the lesion has started to heal. I have faith, even though the return will be defined step by step."
The midfielder was praised by his manager Marcelo Lippi as an "irreplaceable" player in the Italy squad, and Pirlo has the same amount of admiration for the Azzurri boss.
"He always has nice words for me.
"We always call each other. There is mutual respect. He has always been close to me and I thank him for this."
Italy have not been at their best heading into the World Cup, losing to Mexico and earning a draw against Switzerland in their pre-tournament friendlies.
The defending champions will take on Paraguay, New Zealand and Slovakia in Group F.
