Marcello Lippi Explains Italy Choices & Ponders Andrea Cossu Call-Up
Lippi has said his choices were not influenced by quality rather adaptability as he ponders a 24th man...
Italy coach Marcello Lippi has said he is looking to take Andrea Cossu, who was excluded from the squad on deadline day, as the 24th man in South Africa, possibly as an alternative to the injured Mauro Camoranesi.
"I want to take a 24th man to South Africa, and the player in question is Cossu. We will see what happens with Camoranesi, but a 24th man could come with us, at least until the first game." Lippi told the press in Sestriere.
The idea seems to have been born from the injury Camoranesi sustained during Tuesday's training session. He left the pitch with a thigh problem, but was still included in the final 23-man squad after doctors said his injury could take a week to heal.
Lippi then explained the unenviable task of excluding five players from the provisional squad. He said his choices were not forced by a gap quality, but by the way his players can adapt to changing scenarios tactically.
"All the exclusions were difficult, maybe Giuseppe Rossi's was the most difficult one.
"It was not nice choosing who to drop because we have all spent 10 great days together.
"My choices were made on how the players can adapt to different roles, not on the quality of players.
"It's not nice leaving five players at home, but everyone knew this would happen."
Giorgio Chiellini and Camoranesi will not play against Mexico in a friendly on Thursday night.
"Chiellini and Camoranesi will stay behind in Sestriere to recover their best form," he added.
